Certification Engineer


Belfast-Based | Aerospace Experience | 5 years of Post-Degree Practice

Butterfly Flexible Seating Solutions (BFSS) is an international seating company that designs, develops and commercializes innovative design solutions in various transportation sectors. We are currently looking for an experienced certification engineer to join our close-knit aero seating product development team in our Belfast engineering subsidiary (BFEN).

The successful candidate will join our talented team of engineers to support the realization of our award-winning flexible seating solutions. As part of a small highly motivated product development and certification team the post holder will lead certification activities for our premium economy / business class flexible seating solution. As a certification engineer you will be expected to interface with other internal departments and liaise with external suppliers, so effective communication skills are essential for this role.

Certification Engineers will be responsible for:

  • Writing and checking certification documents in accordance with BFEN’s procedures and processes to show compliance to regulations.

  • Witnessing dynamic, static and life vest testing.

  • Liaison between the design organisation and the Agency with respect to all aspects of investigations.

  • Ensuring all designs adhere to the relevant standards and BFEN’s design manuals.

The position will hold a key role in the certification of the Butterfly seat. BFEN operates in the aerospace seating industry, with our main product in development being a flexible aircraft seat that allows instant transformation between premium economy and long-haul flatbed suites. Our design gives airlines the flexibility to adjust cabin configurations based on real-time demand for each flight, enabling them to make the most efficient use of precious cabin space while maximising passenger comfort and appeal.

The Butterfly concept has won numerous awards including the Red Dot Award and the Crystal Cabin Award. The concept was also selected into the first season of Airbus Bizlab accelerator. BFEN is a sister company of Hong Kong-based firm Butterfly Flexible Seating Solutions (BFSS). BFSS was setup to commercialise the novel Butterfly seat concept for air, road and rail, while BFEN was established to advance the engineering development and certification of the seat by making use of the local talent pool of experts in Northern Ireland.

Education/ Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or HND/HNC in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering with relevant experience.

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in the aerospace seating certification sector.

 

Essential Criteria


  • Thorough knowledge of CAA, EASA and FAA regulations and the product certification process

  • Experience of working within an ADOA Organisation and adhering to the ADOA handbook

  • Experience of leading certification activities through the full product lifecycle

  • Experience of witnessing dynamic, static and lifevest testing

  • Experience of ETSO/UKTSO approval process

  • Experience working alongside the authorities/OEMs/Integrators

  • Experience of writing and checking dynamic, static and flammability test plans/reports

  • Experience of writing and checking reports to show compliance to regulations

  • Experience of calculating interface loads for seat products

  • Knowledge of standard design guidelines and procedures

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Competent user of Microsoft Office products

  • Flexible approach regarding working hours

Desirable Criteria


  • Experience of using hand calculations to analyse components

  • Experience of using dynamic FE software such as Radioss and HyperWorks

  • Experience of writing and checking electrical plans/reports

  • Experience of using Solidworks
